Solid food should not be eaten for 1 hour after the permanent adhesive is applied. Do not drink too cold or hot beverages. Hot or cold may damage soft tissues. If anesthesia is applied, you may bite and damage your soft tissues such as tongue, lips and cheeks because of numbness.
(Irritation on tongue, feeling too large, feeling greasy etc.) It is normal to feel uncomfortable for a while after the prosthesis is newly fixed. Every new substance that is put in your mouth (even a filling) will cause some disturbance for the soft tissues and tongue. In about a week, your tongue will get used to the new prosthesis. After a month, they will become a natural part of your body. If these problems are not unbearable we recommend you to wait for a week before visiting your dentist. If they continue after a week, your dentist will fix the problem.
You can use your fixed prosthesis to eat everything you eat with your natural tooth. Just avoid extraordinary forces such as cracking the shell of a hazelnut or pistachio or trying to open a bottle with your teeth. These forces, which you should not even apply to your natural teeth, can cause serious damage to your prosthesis as well.
A common mistake is that patients think that oral care will not be necessary as their crowns will not decay after the prosthesis treatment is applied. Prostheses do not decay because they are artificial, but if the bacteria near the teeth and gums are not cleaned properly, gum recession will occur and the teeth under the crowns will come out and the decay will begin in those parts that are not cleaned well.
There is no natural tooth under an implant, so there will not be decays. However, if you neglect oral care, gum recession will occur and this will reduce the lifespan of your implants.
Oral hygiene is the most important factor in ensuring durability of the prosthesis. Please apply all methods including brushing and mouth washing that are explained in the oral care section. If it is difficult to use a dental floss or interproximal toothbrush, you should definitely use a dental water flosser. We strongly recommend our patients, especially those who have a prosthesis on implant, to use a dental water flosser (Oxyjet).
We use a temporary adhesive in order to see whether the problems mentioned below will occur or not and to understand your prosthetic adaptation after you use the prosthesis for a while. In this regard, it is checked whether there is a problem whether it is functional or aesthetic. It is much more difficult or sometimes impossible to remove the prosthesis after it has been cemented with a permanent adhesive. At the end of this period, if there is no problem, your prosthesis will be cemented with the original adhesive. In case of any problem, it will be solved and then the prosthesis will be fixed with the permanent adhesive.
During treatment sessions, the temporary prostheses are not fixed with a very strong adhesive so that they can be removed and placed several times. This means that your temporary prosthesis may dislocate. In that case, you can visit our clinic without an appointment. If you are not in Istanbul, you can visit a nearby dentist.
Your prosthesis may be broken due to accidents, external forces, grinding of teeth or rarely material-related problems. Usually it is not broken completely but the infrastructure of the prosthesis (metal, zirconium, etc.) and the porcelain dissociate. In other words, the porcelain comes out. In such cases, it is usually possible to solve the problem in patient’s mouth or by dislocating the prosthesis. If this is not possible, we need to reproduce the prosthesis. If you realize a fracture on your prosthesis please contact us.
Right after the placement of your prosthesis, the areas that have been left empty in your mouth for a long time may feel high even if everything is normal. If you still feel the height after two days, you should visit our clinic as soon as possible. If a point is higher on your prosthesis, all stress will be put on part and it will damage that area. Sometimes, even if there is no height, some parts may hit each other when you move your jaw while eating. In both cases your dentist will fix the problem with a little abrasion.
This is usually felt if the prosthesis is high or if it is fixed too tightly to the teeth. If the problem is about height, eat soft food until the necessary adjustments are made by your dentist. A little abrasion will fix the problem. If the problem is about tightness, it will disappear in a week. You can visit our clinic to find out the underlying problem.
Soft tissues such as cheeks and tongue grow towards empty areas that have been toothless for many years. If a problem such as biting soft tissues occurs, a more rounded and polished form will be given to the edges of the prosthesis. If it is very uncomfortable for you, please contact your dentist immediately.
As your teeth are abraded and temporary crowns are tried several times in each session before placing the prosthesis, your teeth may become over sensitive. In addition to that, strong adhesives that are used for final cementation are acidic and thus, cause sensitivity. Do not drink hot or cold beverages for a week after the treatment. You may need to use painkillers on the first day after the final cementation. The cold and hot sensitivity should gradually decrease within 3 weeks. In some cases, sensitivity is an indication of the fact that you may need a root canal treatment. If you have to use continuous painkillers from the second day onwards, arrange an appointment with your dentist without waiting for 3 weeks.
Slight tingling may be normal. But if you have pain that forces you to take painkillers please contact your dentist.
